Mingus Big Band at The Django

Mingus Big Band at The Django
Mon. Dec. 13. 7:30 and 9:30PM. $20 + two drink minimum.

The great jazz composer and bassist Charles Mingus' jaunty tune, “Moanin’,” is one of Mingus’s enduring favorites. (Ed. note: the more well-known tune which shares the same title, "Moanin'," was made popular by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.) Since 1991, the Mingus Big Band, founded by his widow, Sue Mingus, has kept his music alive with a series of weekly residencies here in New York. Their current residency is Monday nights, with the odd December Tuesdays at the Django, which is in cellar of the Roxy Hotel. Expect to hear songs like Moanin’ – sometimes in unexpected arrangements. The Mingus Big Band plays two shows Monday night, Dec. 13, and the next two Tuesday nights, Dec. 21 and 28, at The Django.
