Montañera (real name Maria Monica Gutierrez) is a Colombian singer and songwriter based in London. Drawing on traditional Colombian music and ambient electronics, she has created music that, like Gutierrez herself, is about finding a way to exist in two different worlds at once. Her new album is called A Flor De Piel, literally “like a flower of skin” but generally meaning something that is emotionally on edge. This standout track, “Santa Mar,” features gauzy layers of electronics, grounded by the sounds of a marimba, and pairs Montañera’s own vocals with the earthy sounds of Las Cantadoras de Yerba Buena, a traditional Colombian choir. “Santa Mar” by Montañera is part of our Weekly Music Roundup
