Mostly Mozart (Fringe) Festival - #4400, Rock Me Amadeus, Part 5

New Sounds | Aug 14, 2020

As part of our week-long Mostly Mozart fringe festival to augment Mostly Mozart on WQXRMozart meets glissandos in an homage by Wisconsin-born German-based composer Gloria Coates. There’s also Mozart arranged as Southern Italian folk music, Cuban Mambo and traditional Arab classical music for this fifth and final episode in the Mostly Mozart “Fringe” Festival, subtitled, “Rock Me Amadeus.”

Hear music by Wausau, Wisconsin native Gloria Coates, and her Symphony No. 15, “Homage to Mozart,” written for the 250th anniversary celebration of Mozart’s birth. We’ll hear the movement called “Puzzle Canon” based on a backwards Mozart melody, and lots of glissandos.

Also, hear music by violinist, composer, and improviser Mazz Swift, inspired by Mozart, and recorded live just a few days ago, at the Old Stone House in Brooklyn. Plus, hear an arrangement of a violin concerto for two of the three Villalobos Brothers and a double-bass player, recorded in Staten Island this week, also as part of The Greene Space bringing Mozart to the five boroughs.

Then, listen to Nando Citarella arranges another Mozart opera aria from Marriage of Figaro, done up as a Southern Italian folk song. Hear another arrangement of Mozart by Sarah Willis and the Havana Lyceum Orchestra, from their excellent Mozart y Mambo record, along with more music from Mozart L’Egyptien (Mozart in Egypt) taking on the hues of traditional Arab classical music.
