'The Mothers' Deftly Explores Female Friendship and Womanhood

Author Brit Bennett, whose non-fiction work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine and The Paris Review, discuss her debut novel, The Mothers, which tells the story of Nadia, a young, black teenager from a conservative Christian family living in Southern California. As she prepares to graduate high school and leave home for college, Nadia realizes she’s pregnant as the result of her brief affair with the son of a local pastor.
