Neighborhood Youth Corps

Mayor John V. Lindsay holds a press conference to announce plans for the Neighborhood Youth Corps during the summer. He acknowledges members of Congress, chiefly Jacob K. Javits, for approving a supplemental budget that will give the City of New York 4.9 million dollars to employ 40,000 kids in summer jobs. The goal is to keep them off the streets and out of trouble during time away from school.

Mitchell Ginsberg, Human Resources Administrator; Simeon Golar, Chairman of the Housing Authority; Ted Gross, Urban Action Task Force; and Joseph Halper, Recreation Commissioner each take a few minutes to discuss their department's summer plans.

Members of the press ask questions on whether the program will keep peace in the city, what the other 90% of New York City's kids will do and clarifications on the budget. Lindsay also mentions a recent visit to Brownsville and observed an uneasy mood on employment, housing conditions, and sanitation.
