In medieval Japan, a ronin was samurai who was unattached to a court, so a freelancer. The Swiss pianist Nik Bärtsch calls his band of freelance musicians Ronin, and he brings an almost Zen-like quality to his mix of Minimalist repetition and jazz ensemble playing. The resulting sound, which he calls Ritual Groove Music, can be hypnotic, and can go on for a long time. In 2016, Bärtsch did a program at NYU’s Abu Dhabi campus that featured his Mobile quartet in a 27-hour multimedia program. On Wed., May 6, NYU Abu Dhabi is live streaming just a teeny-tiny, over six hours-long excerpt from that event.
