CM Vanessa Gibson on the New City Budget and Other Bronx News

The Brian Lehrer Show | Jun 6, 2017

Vanessa Gibsoncity council member (District 16, The Bronx -- her district includes West Bronx, Morrisania, Highbridge, and Melrose) and member of the finance committee, talks about the budget deal reached between the City Council and the Mayor.

Gibson discusses funding in the budget for pre-k for 3-year-olds, more funding for food in schools and physical education. Plus, the Council added funding for free legal defense for people facing deportation -- including those convicted of crimes (a point of contention with the mayor).

On the 5-year-old shot in her district who is in the hospital, fighting for his life, she says: "Enough is enough. We have got to put these guns down." She says it underscores the need for gun control at the federal level, but also says on the local level, kids need jobs and opportunities so they don't turn to guns. "

“We still have pockets in our districts where we are dealing with systemic violence, and it is unacceptable…our work is not done.”
