The tale of Orpheus and Eurydice– the husband who travels to the underworld to bring back his dead wife through the power of his music -  is just so timeless. It’s the subject of the hit musical Hadestown, and 250 years ago, it was the subject of an opera by Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714–1787.) Originally, the role of Orpheus was sung by a castrato, someone who, as a young man, had given his all, shall we say, for his art. Nowadays the role is usually sung by a mezzo-soprano dressed as a man – a trouser role, as they call it. Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, with Jamie Barton as Orfeo and Hei-Kyung Hong as Euridice, featuring members of the Mark Morris Dance group, plays at The Metropolitan Opera on Oct., 29, with later shows through November 10.
