Growing up in Ireland, Orla Gartland was exposed to the sounds of traditional Irish folk music. And when she started making her own music, her songs had a kind of folky, acoustic sound. But over the course of a dozen years and six albums, her pop and alt-rock instincts have come increasingly to the fore. Gartland’s lyrics tend to have a sardonic quality to them – see her 2021 album Woman On The Internet, for example. Or the line “no one likes an angry girl” that begins the song called “Backseat Driver.” Orla Gartland plays April 23 at Webster Hall.
