An Unlikely Pair Forge a Bond Traveling Through Texas in 1870

The Leonard Lopate Show | Nov 15, 2016

Author Paulette Jiles joins us to talk about her novel, News of the World, which is set in northern Texas soon after the Civil War. Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through Texas, reading the news to audiences in rural towns. He’s offered $50 to bring an orphan named Joanna to live with her aunt and uncle 400 miles south in San Antonio. They forge a bond along the way, so much so that they’re both unwilling to separate when they arrive in San Antonio.
