Phantom Vibrations

The Brian Lehrer Show | Jan 20, 2016

Do you ever feel like your phone is vibrating...you could almost swear it's vibrating...but it's not? Well, it turns out you're not alone.

Robert Rosenberger, assistant professor of philosophy in the School of Public Policy at the Georgia Institute of Technology, discusses his work on the implications of "phantom vibration syndrome," the common occurrence of thinking your smart phone has vibrated with a text or incoming call, when in fact it has not.

“It’s not even a weird thing anymore," Rosenberger says. In fact, a majority of people feel it. He discusses the various theories as to why we feel it, when it's more common and whether the phenomenon is a cause for concern.
