Valerie Coleman was the founding flutist of the Imani Winds, an inventive wind quintet comprised entirely of artists of color – a hopeful sign in the classical music world. She’s become an in-demand composer too. Her piece, "Umoja," was commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra. The title is a Swahili word that means “unity,” and the work has been picked up by a number of other ensembles, including the University of Hawaii Wind Band. On Saturday, June 6, at 8PM the Philadelphia Orchestra premieres Valerie Coleman's new work, "Seven O’Clock Shout," online - specifically written for socially-distanced musicians. Valerie will also be talking with Wynton Marsalis, who will perform as well as part of HearTOGETHER: A Healing Conversation in Music and Words.
