Philip Glass’s opera Akhnaten is about the Egyptian pharaoh who first espoused monotheism. Akhnaten is presented as a creature of ambiguous gender, and the role is usually sung by a countertenor, the highest male voice. It’s as much a ritual as it is a conventional narrative opera, and now, a new production of Akhnaten is coming to the Metropolitan Opera, one that includes a virtuoso troupe of acrobats and jugglers. For this run of shows, countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo is the title pharaoh, the revolutionary ruler who transformed ancient Egypt, with and the mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges makes her Met debut as his wife, Nefertiti. Akhnaten plays at the Met with a show on Tuesday night, Nov. 12, with further shows until December 7.
