In 1945 Winston Churchill said “America at this moment stands at the summit of the world.” The United States had just proven itself the world’s strongest military power. Its economy was booming, and so was its middle class. Americans were living like never before, buying new cars, suburban houses and bountiful amounts of consumer goods. However, the 1950s were also an era of great conflict as the crusade against communism at home and abroad brought about great fear and exposed the underlying divisions in American society. Author Tom Santopietro examines Sinatra in post-war America and how he reflected the times through music.
