Born in India but based in Brooklyn, singer and composer Priya Darshini has had a lot of musical influences: she studied Indian Classical music, played indie rock in Mumbai, sang on Bollywood film soundtrack, and fell hard for the sounds of classic American jazz. And perhaps because she’s an ultramarathoner, she’s got plenty of lung power for all of those styles. But Darshini’s own songs go beyond genre, as on her Grammy-nominated debut record, Periphery, where she performed with an unusual band who lineup includes hammered dulcimer, bass, and drums. Priya Darshini and her band play March 18 at Joe’s Pub.
