Listen to unexpected duos for this New Sounds, including unlikely pairings of marimba and marimba-like instruments with harp, guitar, or piano, along with cello and kora, and more.
Hear just two musicians at a time, and perhaps combinations of traditional classical instruments of West Africa, and of Western Europe with kora master Ballaké Sissoko and cellist Vincent Segal or a simple unplugged balafon-piano duo. Also, listen to music for the combinations of violin and resonator guitar, and a guitar-bass duo of Bill Frisell and Thomas Morgan.
Hear Malian kora player Ballaké Sissoko and French cellist Vincent Ségal, recorded on a Bamako rooftop, from the stunning record Musique de Nuit. Also, hear the duo of resonator guitar (James Moore) and violin (Andie Springer) using crystal wine glasses in a piece by Paula Matthusen.
Then, there’s more music from the marimba family in a piece from balafon player Lansiné Kouyaté (of the Kela griots in Mali) and French producer/ keyboardist Jean-Philippe Rykiel. Listen to more marimba in music by New York composer Timo Andres for the San Francisco-based duo The Living Earth Show, who are guitarist Travis Andrews and percussionist Andrew Meyerson. Hear harp-and-marimba melodies in Caleb Burhans’ work, “Once in a Blue Moon,” performed by Duo Harpverk (Katie Buckley and Frank Aarnink).
