As Puerto Rico continues to cope with the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria, there are worries that a looming mental health crisis could complicate an already overburdened recovery effort.

While challenges like electricity and food have been widely reported, it's often more difficult to assess the effects of a natural disaster on a population's mental health. And uncertainty about the future is causing depression and anxiety, and access to mental health services are dwindling.

WNYC Producer Alana Casanova-Burgess has been reporting from Puerto Rico. She joins The Takeaway to explain how residents are dealing with a continued lack of basic resources, and how these problems are taking their toll on people's mental health.
