Queens Democrats Back Adrienne Adams for Council Seat

WNYC News | Jul 28, 2017

The newest candidate in a southeastern Queens City Council race has some of the same advantages that an incumbent would.

After former City Council member Ruben Wills was convicted of public corruption charges, the Queens County Democrats needed a new candidate to run in his place. They chose Adrienne Adams, chair of Community Board 12, the second largest community board in the borough.

Attorney Frank Bolz, a lawyer for the Queens county Democrats, filed the candidate’s paperwork with the New York City Board of Elections shortly before closed of business on Thursday afternoon.

Adams had been eyeing the seat. She set up an account with the city's Campaign Finance Board months before Wills' conviction.

So far she's raised just over $10,000, which lags behind the two other Democrats vying for the nomination. Hettie Powell has hauled in five times as much and Richard David, four times.

But Adams has something besides money. She's backed by the Queens county Democrats, and has already secured endorsements from Congressmen Greg Meeks and Joseph Crowley, who is also the county party chair.
