Ragas Live Festival at Pioneer Works
Oct. 14. 8PM. $53.76. All-Ages
24 continuous hours of transcendent, spiritual musicÂ
Brooklyn Raga Massive is a musical collective that weaves the sounds of Indian ragas into all the other styles you’d expect to hear from a group of contemporary New York musicians - styles like Minimalism, generally thought to have begun with Terry Riley’s 1964 piece called In C. So Brooklyn Raga Massive did this Indian-inflected version of the piece, which they called In D. And this weekend (Oct. 14-15), they’ll debut In E Half Flat, a version by Iraqi-American musician Amir ElSaffar that incorporates the quartertone notes of Arab classical music as well. Brooklyn Raga Massive offers their 24 Hour Raga Festival, which includes lots of non-raga music as well, beginning Saturday, Oct. 14 at 8 and concluding 24 hours later on Sunday, at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn.
