New Project Aims to Reimagine the U.S. Prison System

While, the criminal justice system and criminal justice reform have pivoted in terms of policy and practice over the last decade, there is still a long stretch of road ahead when it comes to re-imagining a system that could be drastically different from the one that exists.

The VERA Institute has embarked on a national experiment to re-examine mass incarceration and its failings, with the aim of finding solutions that will produce a tangible plan. This week, we bring you a series of conversations about what it means to reimagine the U.S. prison system.  

Nicholas Turner is president and director of VERA Institute of Justice, and he says a tour of prisons in Germany was the catalyst for his initiative to re-think the prison system in the United States.
