Remembering Dandy, The New York Yankees' Short-Lived Mascot

WNYC News | Mar 31, 2021

Spring is well underway, and the start of baseball season is once again upon us. And after the short, surreal 2020 pandemic season, some fans will be allowed to attend games in person at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field this year for the first time since 2019.

But there's one character who won't be attending Yankees games, neither this year nor any to come: the Bronx Bombers' one-time mascot, "Dandy."

A few years ago, Gothamist editor Jen Carlson sat down with the creators of the pear-shaped, mustachioed mascot to discuss how he came to be, and why Dandy only made it three seasons before being permanently benched. She says Dandy's time with the Yankees got off to a bad start after owner George Steinbrenner publicly declared that mascots have no place on the baseball field.

"They cut back where Dandy was allowed to perform. They banished Dandy to the nosebleed section, and he really didn't stand a chance after that," said Carlson.
