Fighting a Massive Toxic Waste Dump in the Suburbs

The Leonard Lopate Show | Jun 29, 2016

In the late 1970s, the residents of Love Canal, a suburban development in Niagara Falls, NY, organized to protest against a 16-acre toxic waste dump, which contained 100,000 barrels of chemical waste that was leaking into their neighborhood. Historian Richard Newman's latest book, Love Canal: A Toxic History from Colonial Times to the Present explores its affect on future environmental protests throughout the country - including the current fight against fracking.
