Sasha Dobson – "Big Yellow Taxi" (Weekly Music Roundup)

In 1970, Joni Mitchell had a hit with her song “Big Yellow Taxi,” which appeared to be a wry, but good-natured tune tweaking America’s growing consumerism. But singer Sasha Dobson’s new cover uncovers the song’s inner melancholy. Dobson, who’s part of the Americana trio Puss N Boots with Norah Jones and Catherine Popper, presents the melody as a slow croon, accompanied by pastoral sounds of birds and a babbling brook. And when at the end those sounds are interrupted by a jackhammer, Mitchell’s famous lyric “you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone” hits a little harder…

We’re premiering this new cover of “Big Yellow Taxi” sung by Sasha Dobson as part of a forthcoming album called Stop, Hey What’s That Sound: Classic Protest Songs Reinvented. It’s also part of our Weekly Music Roundup.
