Shabaka has been one of London’s most important musicians over the past decade, as leader and sax player of the groundbreaking jazz band Sons of Kemet and the cosmic electronic outfit The Comet Is Coming. But now Shabaka, formerly Shabaka Hutchings, has turned his focus to Africa, releasing a solo album called Afrikan Culture and featuring flutes and percussion in his recent performances. He’s a London fixture but he’s here in New York as artist in residence at the Winter Jazzfest, playing a variety of shows between Jan. 11 and the festival’s end on January 18.
