The Story of Last Night: The Sixth GOP Debate

The Brian Lehrer Show | Jan 15, 2016

If you were following Twitter during the Republican debate last night, you may have noticed something...lyrical about our tweets.

That's because we were tweeting using only lyrics from Hamilton The Musical! And so were a bunch of other WNYC folks.

WNYC's Andrea Bernstein came up with the idea. She describes the similarities between the musical and the debate (there are more than you might think).

Then, Wall Street Journal political editor Jeanne Cummings and Eli Stokols, national political reporter for POLITICO, recap the sixth Republican debate, the second to last before the Iowa caucuses.

Stokols thought it was "fascinating" that "Ted Cruz somehow managed to make Donald Trump seem hum and open to diversity." He's referring to their exchange last night about "New York values," in which Cruz accused Trump of embodying brashness and liberal values. Trump explained why that was offensive, and Stokols says it was "incredibly un-Trump" but effective response.
