New York City has had a lively Balkan music scene for over 30 years, as musicians have fallen under the spell of the hard-charging brass bands, the intricate rhythms, and the serpentine melodies from places like Serbia, Macedonia, and Bulgaria. A long-time leader of that scene is Slavic Soul Party, whose name really tells you all you need to know. This Brooklyn-based institution has a regular Tuesday night residency at the club Barbès, but Friday, Dec. 2, they’ll be at the BAM Café for a free show. They recorded this song, “Baltica,” live in our studio back in 2009.
