Controlled Choice as a Solution for School Segregation
The Brian Lehrer Show | Jun 9, 2016
New York City Council member and deputy leader Ritchie Torres, who represents the 15th council district in the Central Bronx, and Yasmeen Khan, education reporter for WNYC, discuss possible solutions to racial segregation in New York public schools.
Councilmember Torres supports controlled choice, which New York is still in the early stages of planning and implementing. This allows parents to rank their top picks in a lottery system, and the district reserves half of the school's seats for low-income students to create socioeconomic integration.
How two New York City schools tried to integrate in 1964 -- wonderful story by @yasmeenkhanhttps://t.co/oRyaRSGoHB@NPRCodeSwitch
