Sun Ra and his Arkestra at Central Park Summer Stage
Sat. July 24. 7PM EDT. Free.

The cosmic jazz of Sun Ra and his Arkestra, his colorful ensemble of musicians who all lived communally for many years in a big old house in Philly, has continued to delight and sometimes baffle listeners even though Sun Ra himself departed the planet in 1993. Led by Sun Ra’s longtime collaborator Marshall Allen, a sax player who’s still going strong at 97, the Arkestra is a feast for the ears and the eyes: it’s not just the costumes, but the occasional dancing is great fun too. Sun Ra and His Arkestra share their music with the earthlings who join them on Saturday, July 24, at Central Park Summer Stage.
