Syrian Refugee Uncertain About Her Future

The Takeaway | Feb 1, 2017

Sana Mustafa was forced to seek asylum in the U.S. after her father was detained by the Assad regime. The 25-year-old Syrian refugee struggled financially to process the reams of paperwork, and underwent numerous interviews while relying on the kindness of strangers to put her up for a night or invite her to dinner.

Mustafa eventually earned a scholarship to Bard College, graduating last fall, and is now a public speaker and consultant on refugee issues.

She says that despite the positive experience of being welcomed with open arms, the travel ban by the Trump administration puts both her and her family, who have been in the process of resettlement to the U.S. for three years, on unstable ground.
