Thanksgiving Day Parade: Tactics, Timing, and Temperature

WNYC News | Nov 20, 2021

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will be mostly back to normal this year. Everyone is welcome along the 2.5 mile parade route — as long as you're wearing a mask. And if you want to attend the Wednesday afternoon balloon inflation, you'll need to show proof of vaccination.

Gothamist photographer Scott Lynch has been covering the event for years, and he shared some of his tips with Weekend Edition host David Furst.

If you want to watch the balloon inflation, get there early (and viewing runs from noon to 6pm on Wednesday).

And if you want a less crowded viewing spot for the parade, head to Sixth Avenue, not Central Park West, and make sure you're in place soon after 9am.

"Because it's made for TV," Lynch said, "it really comes on time. It's not late, like some of the other parades in the city."
