The Ambulance Entrance
Ben Park sets the scene at an ambulance entrance at a Chicago hospital. Don Herbert takes over when an ambulance actually arrives. The first person in is a man whose throat has been cut. Herbert describes the situation as it happens, interviewing a doctor on-call. The next patient is a man with a broken leg. Herbert again describes the scene - you can hear the man moaning in the background. Herbert is able to interview a man who had come in who is "seldom sober" who had fallen down and harmed himself.
Park tell us that the next person we will follow further, a man who had been hit by a train. First there is a commercial break.
Park describes the scene, and Herbert interviews an intern, who explains what they are about to do. Herbert describes the man as a stocky 55-year-old-man. You can hear the man moaning and hospital staffers working around him in the background. Herbert describes their treatment.
A friend of he patient arrives to console him. Herbert interviews the friend/co-worker of the man, Harry, who describes how Harry was injured and the process by which they were brought to the hospital.
After the hospital staffers finished working on the patient, the physician who attended him describes to Herbert how he was treated.
They speak to the patient, who describes the job he was working doing when he was hit. He describes his pain. He describes his history of safety and whether he will be able to go back to work.
After two days, Herbert checks in on the patient as his doctor is talking with him about his recovery.
They talk to the patient's industrial doctor to check in on what kind of help he is receiving, as well as the type of accidents he sees and the general protocol for treatment with industrial accidents.
Commercial Break
Park describes next week's program, which is about older people who are able to remain active in spite of their age.
