Thomas Friedman, 'Humiliation and Dignity Correspondent'

The Brian Lehrer Show | Oct 25, 2017

Thomas Friedman, New York Times columnist and the author of many books, including The World Is Flat (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2005), The Lexus and the Olive Tree: Understanding Globalization (Picador, 2012) and Thank You for Being Late: An Optimist's Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations (Picador, 2017), talks about maintaining optimism in the face of rapid changes in technology, economics and the climate.

"My business card for the New York Times says, 'Thomas L. Friedman, New York Times Foreign Affairs Columnist.' But I think before I retire I'm going to change that card. I want it to say 'Thomas L. Friedman, New York Times Humiliation and Dignity Correspondent.' Cause I really feel like what I've been covering for all these years is people acting out on their humiliation or questing for dignity," said Friedman, "When people feel looked down upon and people feel humiliated that will trump everything else."
