Top Queens Prosecutors Broke The Rules, Then Got Promoted. The New DA Will Decide Whether To Keep Them In Charge.

Queens' new District Attorney Melinda Katz is inheriting a senior staff with a long track record of misconduct. According to a WNYC review of hundreds of court documents, more than a dozen high-ranking Queens prosecutors have been criticized by courts for serious transgressions, leading to mistrials, vacated convictions, and in some cases wrongful convictions. But personnel records, obtained through the Freedom of Information Law, show nearly all of these officials subsequently scored promotions and salary bumps, with only a handful ever receiving any documented discipline. Legal observers are now waiting to see whether Katz, who promised reform, will keep these senior prosecutors in her administration.
