Two TV Personalities, Two Very Different Exits

WNYC News | Feb 11, 2015

Two media giants are giving up their television thrones, at least for a while. Comedian Jon Stewart announced last night he will leave Comedy Central's The Daily Show later this year. And NBC slapped Nightly News anchor Brian Williams with a 6-month suspension without pay for misleading the public about his involvement in a helicopter incident in Iraq.

On the Media's Bob Garfield says it will be tough for Williams to rebound.

"It's really hard if your job is to command the trust of the nation when you get caught in a lie," Garfield said. "Suddenly, it's not just the lie you got caught in but people start wondering what else you've said over the years that is also untrue."

As for the future of the two empty anchor chairs, Garfield says television news has far bigger problems than the Williams kerfuffle. And for Comedy Central, he says it's hard to imagine anybody mastering The Daily Show host chair in the same way Stewart has.

"We're going to have to get used to somebody who is not going to be as good at his job or her job as Jon Stewart is at his."
