Overnight, Confederate monuments in the city of Baltimore were quietly removed from public spaces, following the violence that broke out in neighboring Virginia over the weekend. Baltimore has pledged to remove four statues tied to the Confederacy from the city.

As more cities plan statue removals in the wake of this weekend's recent unrest in Charlottesville, Virginia, The Takeaway speaks with Vann Newkirk, a writer for The Atlantic, about the significance of the nation's Confederate monuments, and the likely impact of their removals.
