Using 'They' as the Default Pronoun

A law professor wrote recently that they plan to use the singular "they" for all of their students as a default until they know the students' preferred pronouns. Listeners call in to share their thoughts on not assuming to know someone's gender identity until they have said what it is, and on the default use of the singular "they."
