This Week in Politics: New York's "National Liberal Superstar"

WNYC News | Jul 28, 2018

After her shocking Democratic primary win over 10-term congressman Joe Crowley, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has suddenly become a national figure.

She's preparing for a general election showdown with Republican candidate Anthony Pappas in New York's 14th Congressional District, in Queens and the Bronx. But this week she found the time to hit Washington DC. And last weekend she was in Kansas – campaigning for Democratic candidates along with Senator Bernie Sanders.

On "This Week in Politics," host David Furst discussed the Ocasio-Cortez phenomenon with WNYC's Washington correspondent, John O'Connor, and Mike Lillis, reporter for The Hill.

O'Connor reports that she raised $100,000 in just four days after her victory in the primary. Lillis calls Ocasio-Cortez a new "national liberal superstar."

"She's using her celebrity, her name brand – and her 750,000 Twitter followers – and she's taking the show on the road," he says.
