Why The Way We Think About War Is Wrong

The Leonard Lopate Show | Oct 13, 2017

Lawrence Freedman, emeritus professor of War Studies at King's College London, joins us to discuss his new book, The Future of War: A History. Freedman uses examples from history to show how our predictions around war are often incorrect, yet we repeatedly return to those outdated ideas when thinking about future conflicts. This includes the idea that wars can be quickly won by using a "knock out blow." Freedman also how explores how our ideas about what constitutes a war is changing, and blurring the lines between war and peace.

Lawrence Freedman will appear at Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs (Merrill House, 170 East 64th Street, between Lexington Ave. & 3rd Ave.) on Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.

Note: Jonathan Capehart guest-hosted this segment of the "The Leonard Lopate Show."
