Where to Donate Cash, Turkeys and Your Time This Thanksgiving

Whether you're looking for opportunities to volunteer on Thanksgiving Day, or wanting to make a donation before you head out of town for the holiday, there are myriad ways to be giving this week. Here are a few, and if you know of a volunteer opportunity that's missing from our list, or a place where those in need can receive a free Thanksgiving meal, please mention it in the comments.  

The Bowery Mission

• You can make cash donations, make tax-deductible purchases of items directly requested by the mission, and on November 18th and 19th, several local stores are donating proceeds of sales to the Mission.

FeedingNYC

• Provide a family with a complete Thanksgiving meal by donating through the "Adopt a Box" program, or register to volunteer on Tuesday, November 21, when meals will be packed up and delivered to local families. 

CAMBA

• Make a donation to CAMBA’s Beyond Hunger Emergency Food Pantry, which holds its "500 Turkeys for 500 Families" drive on Church Avenue in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn.

God's Love We Deliver

• Volunteers with cars are needed to make food deliveries on Thanksgiving Day.

 City Harvest

• Donate non-perishable food items at City Harvest’s office in Midtown, any FDNY or NYPD station, and select Goodwill or Apple Bank locations throughout the city. Also, the organization says every $1 cash donation helps it "rescue four pounds of food that would otherwise go to waste."

Our Lady Queen Of Martyrs

• Donations of canned and nonperishable foods will be accepted before or after Sunday Masses on November 19 and the 10 a.m. Thanksgiving Day Mass on November 23.

B'nai Jeshurun

• The Thousand Turkey Challenge will be accepting frozen turkey donations on Sunday, November 19, at the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew on the Upper West Side. If you can't make it, the West Side Campaign Against Hunger will also accept frozen turkey donations the week of Thanksgiving, along with financial donations.

WHERE TO RECEIVE A FREE THANKSGIVING MEAL

• 3 Black Cats Cafe, at 3 Belmont Ave in Brooklyn, is opening its doors and closing its cash register in the afternoon on Thanksgiving.
• Abraham House, at 340 Willis Ave in the Bronx, is giving away turkeys on Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. 
• The Bowery Mission, at 227 Bowery, is serving meals from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, and giving out coats and toiletry supplies.
• Heights and Hills. On Thanksgiving, dinner is served for a $1 ticket. At Grace Church, 254 Hicks St, Brooklyn
• Peoples Baptist Church, at 105 Riverdale Ave in Brooklyn, is serving dinner on Thanksgiving from noon to 4 p.m.
• Word of Life, at 830 Union Ave in the Bronx, will give away turkeys and barbecue on Saturday at 11 a.m.
