The White Horse Tavern: Dylan Thomas' Second Home

Features | Oct 31, 2014

As Dylan Thomas explored New York City for the first time, the White Horse Tavern became one of his favorite spots. To this day, the bar has become synonymous with the poet's name.

The BBC's Carolyn Hitt sat down with Eddie Brennan, co-owner of the White Horse Tavern in the West Village to hear stories about his first encounters with Dylan Thomas. Brennan talks about the poet's late-night escapades and failing health, the scores of poets and patrons he inspired, and how the bar has stayed the same decades later.

This interview is a part of WNYC and BBC's Dylan Thomas centenary celebration. You can find more coverage on Dylan Thomas on our special centenary page, including additional interviews with those who worked closely with him during his time in New York, as well as the new performance of "Under Milk Wood" directed by actor Michael Sheen at New York's 92Y.
