On Monday afternoon, newly-appointed White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci was forced out of his job — just 10 days after he accepted the position. Known as "The Mooch," Scaramucci is now the shortest-serving communications director in White House history. He filled the role after Sean Spicer resigned on July 21 (he served 180 days).
Yesterday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that Scaramucci's departure resulted from "inappropriate comments." He had made "harsh remarks" directed at Reince Priebus, the former White House chief of staff, who left the post last Friday, and Steve Bannon, the chief White House strategist. The New Yorker reported on the extent of a Scaramucci verbal tirade.
During the Monday briefing, Sanders said Scaramucci left to allow for General John Kelly's succession from secretary of Homeland Security to White House chief of staff.
Besides Scaramucci and Spicer, Katie Walsh, former deputy chief of staff under Priebus, was forced from the job in March. The initial White House communications director, Mike Dubke, resigned in May. Walter Shaub, former director of the Office of Government Ethics, left in July. And then James Comey, former F.B.I. director, was fired in May, following the resignation of Michael Flynn, Trump's first national security adviser, in February.
Rosie Gray, White House correspondent for The Atlantic, and Chris Whipple, author of "The Gatekeepers: How the White House Chiefs of Staff Define Every Presidency," say this may be Gen. Kelly's biggest challenge to date.Â
