William Warfield Live in the WNYC Studio

NYPR Archives & Preservation | Feb 24, 2022

On May 19, 1954, the great African American bass-baritone William Warfield (1920-2002) was invited to the WNYC studio for David Randolph's Music for the Connoisseur program.  Still early in his career, Warfield was there to sing German ballads by the composer and conductor Carl Gottfried Loewe. He had recently given a successful New York recital and was accompanied by the pianist Otto Hertz.  The above recording picks up with Randolph providing some context for the works sung by Warfield.
