The Tibetan singer Yungchen Lhamo escaped from China by crossing the Himalayas. On foot. With her young son in tow. Since then, she has become perhaps the best-known voice of her people, performing with Western musicians like Peter Gabriel and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead. She’s also sung for the Dalai Lama. Many of her songs are rooted in Buddhism, and most of them celebrate universal values like compassion, understanding, and happiness. Yungchen Lhamo performs with special guest and fellow upstate resident Natalie Merchant, in a benefit concert tomorrow night in Kingston, NY, at the Old Dutch Church.
