#4888, New Music From Colombia

New Sounds | May 22

Take a tour of new music from Colombia and the Colombian diaspora, including cumbia-inspired music by Queens band Combo Chimbita, Japan’s Minyo Crusaders, Berlin-based Lucrecia Dalt, Swiss-based band Palenque la Papayera, and electronic music producer, composer and environmentalist Savan.

Listen to  traditional instruments, indigenous pieces of the rainforest, and recordings of birds from Colombian electronic music producer, sound artist and environmentalist Jose Miguel Navas, a.k.a. Savan. Savan has immersed himself in the ancestral music of the Amazon and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta by making recording sessions with indigenous singers and ancestral grandparents from these regions. Listen to his piece, ” Aguíla de Paramo”, named for the black chested buzzard eagle, (Bandcamp.) Then, hear more indigenous pieces of the rainforest, and recordings of birds collected from along the Magdalena River in Colombia, by Simón Mejía, founder and co-leader of Bomba Estéreo. It’s from his recording project, Monte, built on the sounds of these field recordings.

Also, sample the band La Perla from Bogotá, Colombia. La Perla consists of three women who sing and play all kinds of percussion, drawing on a huge range of traditional South American rhythms, as well as elements of rap and Caribbean music. Hear their tune with the Colombian cumbia experimentalists Frente Cumbiero. Plus, listen to the Japanese band Minyo Crusaders also in collaboration with Frente Cumbiero, riffing on a Colombian cumbia tune called “Cumbia Del Monte” (the cumbia of the mountain) and one which references Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji.

There's also work by Berlin-based experimental musician Lucrecia Dalt channels growing up in Colombia with tropical rhythms and sci-fi storytelling combined with woodwinds, brass, and upright bass, all processed by memory and modular synths. Then, hear more cumbia from Colombia by way of Switzerland-based Palenque la Papayera, along with music by Combo Chimbita, the quartet of Colombian musicians based here in New York. They’ve "taken the traditional cumbia rhythm as a springboard for their own wide-ranging explorations of rock, electronica, and dance music, while remaining rooted in the folklore of Colombia", (Schaefer, 2022). That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
