#5036, Phasing

New Sounds | Oct 21

Listen to music that goes in and out of phase – like in Steve Reich’s “Clapping Music”, along with music from drummer/composer Evan Chapman, keyboardist and composer Kelly Moran, and American composer/electronic artist Dan Deacon.

Philadelphia-based composer, drummer, percussionist, and filmmaker Evan Chapman is best known as a founding member of contemporary-classical percussion trio/rock band Square Peg Round Hole. His 2024 album, Reveries, blends acoustic and electronic elements. From it, listen to a piece called “Windows”, a “slow burn of musical accumulation and layering” (Clandestine press notes), which combines drones (created by pressing audio exciters against vibraphone bars), guitar swells, keyboards, and a two drum set phase a la Steve Reich.

Also, hear recent music by pianist and composer Kelly Moran, from her series of duets between herself and the Yamaha Disklavier player piano, Moves in the Field, which merges the Yamaha Disklavier’s inhuman capabilities with her own playing.

Then, hear electronics and field recordings as they swell and distort, by Blanck Mass, the solo project of British composer Benjamin John Power (a founding member of Fuck Buttons and now full-time member of Editors). Also, there’s “Horn Phase”, a sample of Deacon's score for Theo Anthony's Rat Film exploring issues of race and class in Baltimore. Plus, hear the urgent, hypnotic patterns by composer, performer, and producer Joshua Fried. Also, listen to Joshua Fried’s musical shoes, as played with drumsticks in the service of Linda Fisher’s piece, “Big Mouth,” featuring cartoon music and sound effects, from a live performance recorded back in 1990, and more. - Caryn Havlik
