#5182, From the 2026 New York Guitar Festival

About a month ago, guitarists and guitar fans gathered at Bryant Park for a series of performances and conversations as part of this year’s New York Guitar Festival. As per tradition, we bring excerpts from the event to New Sounds listeners, starting with Brazilian guitarist Gabriele Leite and Australian duo Ziggy & Miles.

Gabriele Leite, who believes that Brazil and the guitar are “kind of like family”, studied her instrument practically her whole life. Although she’s currently based in New York, she takes her musical inspirations from her homeland, championing Brazilian Popular Music in her work. Her setlist includes pieces from composers Marco Pereira, Garoto, Dilermando Reis, Paulo Bellinati, and Chiquinha Gonzaga, who is widely known as the first woman conductor in Brazil.

Melbourne-born brothers Ziggy & Miles are the first guitar duo to be accepted into the Juilliard School’s Artist Diploma. Since then, they’ve been regulars at various guitar competitions, collecting trophies from all over the world. Their setlist also contains a couple of Brazilian pieces, from Radamés Gnattali, while also casting a wider net to include works from Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla and Tashkent-born Australian musician Elena Kats-Chernin. - Sırma Munyar
