#4932, Electronic Music, Old and New

There’s music by Vienna-based American multimedia artist, composer, producer, and songwriter Ariadne Randall; vintage computer music from American musician Paul Lansky; and a work by experimental electronic composer Elori Saxl.

Ariadne Randall is an American multimedia artist and classically-trained musician currently based in Vienna, Austria. A trans woman, her latest release is called Her Water Dream / A Blue Thumbs Up, which her label’s Bandcamp calls “Ambient noise and broken songs”, and engages with her experiences both before and after transition. Her bio details how “her practice is rooted in a fusion of influences derived from Zen kōans, low theory, postwar American experimentalism, Medieval aural and visual forms, contemporary digital culture, and poetry”, (Ariadnerandall.com).

There’s also work by New York-based American experimental electronic composer Elori Saxl inspired by her experience of living on Madeline Island in Lake Superior and commissioned by Chicago's Third Coast Percussion ("Drifts I"). The liner notes describe how the work touches on several intertwined themes of “how technology has come to define our daily life: the blurring of physical and digital worlds, the compression and datafication of human experience, and the paradox of everyday stasis and constant change”, (Dave Sutton, liner notes from Bandcamp).

There’s also vintage computer music from American composer Paul Lansky, work by British electronic music artist and producer Aphex Twin, and a piece from the 1980s by American electronic musician and composer David Borden. – Caryn Havlik
