#5183, A World Tour of Bagpipes
Listen to music featuring bagpipes from France, the Balkans, Central Asia, and from Oman and Iran in music by Francois Robin & Mathias Delplanque, the Oman Bagpipe Singers, and from the Afro-Iranian musician Saeid Shanbehzadeh.

There’s music from a collaboration between Tunisian jazz and Sufi singer Mounir Troudi, Breton bagpiper Erwan Keravec, and French-Lebanese percussionist Wassim Halal. Also, listen to music from the Afro-Iranian musician Saeid Shanbehzadeh involving his saxophone and bagpipes, together with vocalist Rostam Mirlashari, a “Prince of Baluchistan music” exiled in Sweden in 1991. It’s from a record named Pour-Afrigha (“descendant of Africa”).
Listen to the qurbah (bagpipe, or “music pipes”) from Oman, with singing mostly in Swahili and music that mixes African rhythms and bagpipes. These descendants of the “other” African slave trade are "referred to as the Zanzabari (or sometimes locally as Khal people). And they sing the songs of those who were brought forcibly by ship centuries before", often with the blown sea conch shell, (Bandcamp). There’s also music from the Torupilli Jussi Trio for Estonian bagpipes, the fiddle, and the talharpa, a four-stringed Estonian bowed instrument without a fingerboard, related to the jouhikko.
Then, listen to the French bagpipe (veuze) in music by the duo of multi-instrumentalist François Robin and electronic artist Mathias Delplanque. In their tune, “Perdu”, layers of bagpipe, snyth, Armenian duduk, and mizmar (Arabic single or double reed wind instrument) are arranged into a pulsing drone-trance-slow-build until the bagpipes soar above. There’s music for bagpipes called gaida, (where the bags are made of goat hide) in music from 3 Mustaphas 3 and on the gaita by celebrated Galician bagpiper Cristina Pato. And more. - Caryn Havlik
