#5017, East & Old Meets West & New
There’s music from Egypt, Iran, Israel, Turkiye, Morocco, India and more where traditional sounds are blended with contemporary production techniques. Listen to work by Nadah El Shazly, the Egyptian-born, Montreal-based producer, vocalist, and composer; music from Turkish-born Mercan Dede; and the tri-partite collaboration Junun who are the India-based Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur, a group of Indian musicians called The Rajasthan Express, and composer (and Radiohead’s guitarist) Jonny Greenwood.
There’s also music from the Persian-American singer, composer, and multimedia artist Sussan Deyhim in work made with her late partner Richard Horowitz, which explores the intersection of traditional Iranian music and hi-tech Western electronics. Then, listen to music from Turkish-born Mercan Dede, who combines modern electronic beats and atmospheric effects with Sufi-inspired music drawn from his study of the ney flute and of the 13th century philosopher and poet Rumi. There’s also Indo-electronica by the late producer DJ Cheb I Sabbah who has layers ragas atop trancey warped swirls of drones and suffuses them with innovative percussion patterns.
