In Season: cherries

WNYC News | Jun 19

Juneteenth is traditionally celebrated by eating red foods and drinking red beverages to symbolize bloodshed, power and transformation.

Amelia Tarpey is the Program and Publicity Manager for GrowNYC Greenmarkets. She says you can find rainier and Bing cherries at Greenmarkets to eat fresh. Sour or tart cherries are available too, and are best used for baking. Amelia shares a recipe for Cherries Jubilee from the cookbook Watermelon & Red Birds: A Cookbook for Juneteenth and Black Celebrations by the food writer Nicole A. Taylor. It's the perfect dessert to make for this Juneteenth weekend.
